What happens to my data if Ma’atara shuts down?
There is no open-source or self-host promise to point to. The honest guarantee is your own export — and how current it is depends on you.
We are not going to claim a commitment that does not exist in this product today: there is no published open-source release and no self-hosting option for the notes or identity services. If Ma’atara’s services stop running, the service side of the product stops with them.
What you actually control
Parable lets you export your own notebook at any time from Settings → Back up and recover: a readable export that decrypts your notes and files in the browser and writes them out as plain archives, or an encrypted backup that preserves exactly what is stored, restorable only on a device holding the same identity. Neither requires anyone’s permission or availability beyond your own browser.
That export is the actual guarantee. It is only as current as the last time you ran it, so if your notes matter to you, export periodically rather than assuming you can do it later.
Public provenance records specifically
A capsule’s public record — the signature, the fingerprints, the registration time — is served from Ma’atara’s own services today. Publishing a periodic anchor to an independent public ledger (so a capsule could still be checked without Ma’atara’s services running) is on the roadmap but is not live in production. Until it is, a capsule’s independent checkability depends on Ma’atara remaining available, not on a third party holding a copy.
